History of Branding

The History of Branding is an information website on how most powerful brands started. It includes important details and notes of the histories of several brands. I found it quite useful for a designer. It is important to know details especially when you work on corporate identity.

There are some nice and strange details, for example:

IKEA was founded in Älmhult, Sweden, in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, then 17. The company name is a composite of the first letters in his name in addition to the first letters of the names of the property and the village in which he grew up: Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. This acronym is incidentally similar to the Finnish word oikea.

The very first item sold on eBay was Omidyar’s broken laser pointer for $13.83. Astonished, he contacted the winning bidder and asked if he understood that the laser pointer was broken. In his responding email, the buyer explained: “I’m a collector of broken laser pointers.”

Ray Kroc, at 52 years old, invested his entire life savings to become the exclusive distributor of a milk shake maker called the Multimixer. Hearing about the McDonald’s hamburger stand in California owned by Dick & Mac McDonald running eight Multimixers at a time, he packed up his car and headed West. It was 1954. Ray Kroc had never seen so many people served so quickly. He pitched the idea of opening up several restaurants to the McDonald brothers, convinced that he could sell eight of his Multimixers to each and every one. “Who could we get to open them for us?” Dick McDonald said. Well,” Kroc answered, “what about me?”

Perly Burly by Dave Bollinger

A virtual curio cabinet where I can collect a number of miscellaneous works in areas that interest me. Those areas tend to be quite varied, so you’ll find math, art, computers and programming, music, electronics tinkering, geography, games and puzzles, et cetera.

Dave Bollinger is a digital artist and programmer. You may see his works at his website and flickr. Especially, one of his latest works, “Storm” is quite impressive in terms of aesthetics. It is also recommended to visit complexification.net where the artist mostly inspired from.

Inconvenient Truth
Small map of portion of Antartica showing loss of land and sea based ice.

The infogprahics above from the famous documentary film, ‘An Inconvinient Truth‘. The movie itself explains a very important topic, so called, global warming. It is highly recommended to watch the movie as a designer, as an inhabitant of the earth. You may find the detailed information regarding the movie at this website. And It is possible to see all of those beatiful infographics collection on Flickr!

As a final note; besides all of good and important facts the movie introduces; there are some hidden messages and publicity on behalf of Al gore and USA, which I don’t like in a way.

Helmut Schmid, design is attitude

«schmid today» is a research project about the designer and typographer Helmut Schmid by the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf’s Design Department. Helmut Schmid is an austrian graphic designer who studied in Switzerland at the Basel School of Design under Emil Ruder, Kurt Hauert and Robert Buchler. (The gurus of Swiss typography!).

The research team of 55 students around them collected, researched and cataloged designs by Helmut Schmid for the course of three years. The Archive documents Schmid’s complete works, including originals from the past 40 years. The results of the research are published now in an international exhibition, a book, a project documentary and in the digital realm for the first time.

The archive on the website is very rich and organized. I hope to visit the exhibition if it comes to Vienna/Munich one day :)

300 comparison by Solace in cinema

A new comics origin movie, 300, will be coming to theatres in march. It is based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller and directed by Zack Snyder. The trailers of the movie looks very promising in terms of story and visual atmosphere. A blog on cinema, called Solace in cinema, compares the screens from trailer with the drawings in the original comic book. It is a very well done comparison.

My interest in the film ‘300′ is bordering on obsession. I thought it might be interesting to see how closely Zack Snyder is sticking to the original comic books. Pretty damn closely it appears.

Pretty same idea applied for sincity by filmrot before.
